Practical Philosophy

This is the introductory course. It is for anyone seeking an understanding of our existence and the world in which we live. It is not a history of philosophy, nor a comparative study of philosophies, but uses traditional philosophical thought to understand life in the 21st century.

It is currently offered two times each year beginning in February, and September. Each of the two parts of this course is taught over 12 consecutive weeks. The next course start dates are:

The course may be offered on Saturday mornings if there is sufficient demand. Course commencement dates may be subject to change. Please check this site closer to the start of each term for confirmation.

The courses are held in the School premises in Newcastle and begin at 7:00 PM. The evening includes a tea break and concludes at about 9:30 PM. Practical Philosophy, Part 1

Wisdom from East and West, past and present is examined to shed light on the process of understanding yourself while developing practical skills relevant to you today. No prior knowledge or training is necessary. More information.

Practical Philosophy, Part 2

The nature of true happiness. Topics include The Platonic Virtues – the divine and human good; the Vedic concept of happiness – the eternal present and the relationship between happiness and law; Marsilio Ficino’s “Immortality of the Soul” - understanding one’s true self. More information.

Practical Philosophy, Part 3

Love and its manifestations: the principles of work, inner organs of the mind, nature of intelligence; the causes of duality and hostility and the importance of stillness in reaching deeper and broader levels of love; the effect of gratitude. More information.
