Introduction to Plato
Embracing an international revival of interest in this great western philosopher, the School from time to time offers an introduction to the works of Plato and to his mentor Socrates. This course has previously been offered on a Monday night from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. There is no cost for currently enrolled students of the School of Philosophy. The cost for non-students is $30.
Week 1 – Introducing Plato, Socrates and the time in which they lived. Showing how the study of Plato’s works can be enjoyable, revealing and rewarding. We begin our examination of Plato's writings with the “Euthyphro” dialogue which takes place just prior to Socrates' trial. This is a good example of the dialectic technique used by Socrates.
Week 2 – The “Apology”, Plato’s description of the trial of Socrates. We will give voice to Plato’s words and examine what arises, considering its relevance to our daily lives
Week 3 – The “Crito”, Plato’s description of Socrates in prison awaiting death and examine the technique of Dialectic in greater detail.
Weeks 4 through 6 – The “Phaedo”, Plato’s description of the death of Socrates.
Plato Study Group
The School sometimes runs a Plato Study Group on Saturday mornings.
We have previously studied the works of Plato including “The Republic” in which Plato presents us with a view of an ideal society. However, with so much material available and access to international authorities on the subject, other course formats may be offered, depending on interest. The method of the group has previously been to give voice to Plato’s words and examine what arises, considering its relevance to our daily lives.
When the group is offered there is no cost for enrolled students, only your enthusiasm to participate. Please let your tutor know before the beginning of next term if you would like to attend.
Introduction to the Bhagavad-gita
Introduction to the Indian Philosophic classic the Bhagavad-gita, it’s relevance and place in both eastern and western philosophy. This can be offered as an evening course, typically from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. There is no cost for currently enrolled students of the School of Philosophy. The cost for non-students is $30.
