What We're About

Unless you start doing something different, you’re in for more of the same.

A common thread runs through all the great religions and philosophies of the world – the idea that life is a great and noble thing and that the human being is made for greatness and nobility.

All that is needed is knowledge to discover the means, will to carry the means into action, and the company of like-minded people to share the journey.

The School of Philosophy was founded in London in 1936 (more history). The School opened its doors in Sydney in 1967. Over a period of four decades it has expanded to every capital city in Australia. It began presenting courses in Newcastle in 1992. More than thirty-thousand people have taken the introductory course. The School has evolved into a unique organisation:

We welcome a healthy spirit of enquiry and sees this as a prime requisite for the transformative process to begin.

It is a place where you can embark on your own voyage to discover your true purpose; in your own time, at your own pace, with access to all possible resources for the journey.

Part 1 of the course is the first taste of Practical Philosophy. And it is hoped that through this, you may begin to see the School as you would a friend: with you for the long term.

Voluntary Organisation

Tea break at the SchoolAll work in the School is performed by students in a spirit of service and philosophical practice and is undertaken on an unpaid, voluntary basis.

All tutors are senior members of the School who have studied Philosophy at the School for many years and still keep their learning fresh in the company of their own group on a weekly basis. No tutors are paid.

The School is a not-for-profit organisation and a deductible gift recipient. The School’s teaching and residential properties have been acquired through the financial generosity of past and present students and are administered by a Committee of Management.
